Moyes and the GOAT conversation
So we appear to be heading in the right direction and it’s no coincidence that our fortunes turned around when Moyes came back.

Since his return we have had some good finishes in the table, some great cup runs especially in Europe.
We’ve even broken a record with European wins along the way. We’re beating the best teams now and even have some silverware to show for our efforts.

So where does he stand in the list of west Ham managers? Is he our GOAT?

If not, what would it take? Win the Europa league? Top 4 finish? F A Cup win?

And for the haters what will it take to change your opinion? Is there anything he can do to win you over?

Finally, Where does this current team compare to the best teams we’ve had?

Re: Moyes and the WFTOAT conversation
If by greatest you mean successful then Moyes is definitely on the way there. Our only manager to secure more than one top seven finish in the top flight and the best trophies per full season ratio.

Greenwood and Lyall are obviously club legends but it would be interesting to see how their performances would be held up in the modern era - imagine having the best defender in the world as well as two other world cup winners and only securing midtable finishes? And just look at the squad that Lyall had in 77/78 and sitll got relegated.

Re: Moyes and the WFTOAT conversation
Marty - I always felt that Ron was more of a top level coach than a manager and it's pretty well know his man management skills weren't the best, that's where Lyall was far better than Ron. I think Ron's principals got in the way as well especially turning down the chance to sign Gordon Banks because he had already shaken hands on a deal for Bobby Ferguson. Admire him for it but bloody hell can you imagine Banks behind Moore, Hurst and Peters! The way West Ham played against Munich 1860 was perfection but in fairness you couldn't play like that in a 42 game season, that's why I mentioned the state of the pitches back then below, they certainly didn't help The West Ham Way!!

Cloughie had a point but you could also argue Clough's best days were with Peter Taylor and that's where I think Moyes weakness is. I think he surrounds himself with Yes men at first team level and Allardyce was the same. Moyes biggest mistake at Man United was to kick out most of the coaching staff who had been successful under Fergie. That's what I find confusing at West Ham, that in the younger teams you have the likes of Steve Potts, Kenny Brown and Kevin Keen as coaches. All ex players who played in teams that played football. Are they asked to play Moyes ball in those teams below?

Re: Moyes and the WFTOAT conversation
He's nowhere near the best manager the clubs had . Lyalls way ahead of him . And greenwood is also in front even though he massively underachved given the players at his disposal . As cloughie said how could you fail to win the league with Englands 3 best players at the 66 world cup side as the spine of the team . Definitely ahead of redknapp though. Even if Harry's teams were more pleasing on the eye . And the real Marty Feldman could see that .

I agree with you. It is definitely tough at times to watch.

Not as bad as Fat Sam who definitely was the Worse but he is definitely setting us up defensively..

Saying that we do have our games where we play some nice stuff, it’s not always negative.

I get the gripe but to call for him to be sacked is foolish!

Re: Moyes and the GOAT conversation
And for the haters what will it take to change your opinion? Is there anything he can do to win you over?

I'm not a hater, I'm somewhere in between. But the answer is pretty obvious and it's all about the approach / style of football.

No-one can doubt his achievements since he's been here and the level of success he has achieved. Without sounding too entitled I feel like this is the sort of level we should be at but have struggled to reach, but we are here thanks to Moyes.

What pisses off the fans is his attitude not only to the big games but the smaller ones too. To some degree we expect a more defensive minded approach against some of the big clubs, some of the time. But not all of the big clubs all of the time. What is worse, is that he has the same attitude at home to relegation certain teams.

I've see us roll over and let teams dominate us in too many games. But what I've never seen is the team look to dominate anyone else. We haven't even been able to dominate the lesser teams in the cup or in Europe.

And now, even with a deadly front three of Bowen, Paqueta, Kudus, we still sit back and wait for opportunities rather than taking the game to our opponents.

THAT is why he is so divisive.

Re: Moyes and the WFTOAT conversation
With Paqueta and Kudus we are watchable, without we aren't... last night was very painful.

I have absolutely no doubt that another manager could improve our performances. Whether or not that would increase our points tally I do not know?

If we can continue to add better players then Moyes becomes less of an issue but if we can't keep hold of our best players and fail to replace with at least as good then it is not going to end well.

Moyes and the WFTOAT conversation

Worst Footballing Team Of All Time

Pound for pound we're the worst in the Prem, currently. We play the same style as Sheffield Utd & Luton, difference being you could buy their entire squads for what we paid for Kudus.

Saying, scrap that. Luton give it a good go most of the time.

Yes those are the facts and in all honesty I wonder if that would be accepted now by much of the fan base,. But I wholeheartedly agree with what Fifth writes below. From all the books I have read about Lyall and Greenwood and the club as a whole for me as an individual the Lyall years were the best as a whole and I still to this day think the club made a ricket by getting rid of John totally. Yes he lost the plot a bit towards the end but as many an ex player has stated a move upstairs should at least have been offered to someone with that much experience and knowledge, although of course we will never know if John would have accepted that.

Of course in today's world of social media and constant press pressure along with the pressures of financial security being guaranteed by only staying in the Premier League who knows how each man would have fared? All I can say is both seemed likeable men who signed good footballers, although John added a bit more "steel" and played football the right way at the expense of course of results, again a philosophy that possibly wouldn't be 100% accepted today. My point was that with the pitches in mint condition these days both Ron and John's philosophies would have probably been even more successful, after all can you imagine how Brooking, Devonshire and co would have played on the bowling greens we have now. Plus both Ron and John brought young players through, another staple of the "West Ham Way".

Bonds and Redknapp still showed the West Ham philosophy and certainly Harry's tenure was a rollercoaster with the bad times probably forgiven because he went for it football wise and we had some great youngsters come through. Yes of course it was a bloody shame we didn't hold onto them.

Pards it could be argued went to far in some ways trying to use the history of the club as motivation but at least he embraced it rather than push it aside. Curbs probably surprised me most with what was a boring brand of football considering he had been a player at the club, but he did stabilise difficult times and one does wonder how he would have progressed if he had stayed.

I have respect for Moyes for what he has achieved in both League position and will always be thankful for the Cup win last year but as Fifth writes below " "greatest" implies more than results. It's how a player/manager carries themselves, speaks to/about the fans, understands the club." He is either stubborn in his ways footballing wise or he just is unable to coach a team to play football on the front foot with players actually able to string more that five passes together. He has his positives obviously and the statistics will point to his successes in numbers and tables but for me he is far from being the GOAT. Just my opinion of course.

Re: Moyes and the GOAT conversation
To me, "greatest" implies more than results. It's how a player/manager carries themselves, speaks to/about the fans, understands the club.

His football has largely been shit to watch and as a result I tend to only go to away matches now and about 10% of home matches. No other manager, even Allardyce, did that to me personally.

He also slags off the fans indirectly or directly on a fairly regular basis. I've never been more angry at a match with a manager than the Liverpool cup match - turning up after a shitty long drive with 6000 others to see he'd thrown the match. Allardyce had done that with a semi a few years earlier but I hadn't been as upset because I felt Allardyce genuinely didn't have a lot of choice.

Given our spend over last couple of years is about 8th in PL, an 8th place finish should be par. My prediction is he'll finish 9th and we won't win a cup meaning his performance is mediocre.

I genuinely hope I'm wrong.

All the above means for me he can't possibly be our GOAT.

Is his league record that bad? If we get 6th or 7th this season, nobody comes anywhere near for consistent finishes...unless you count Div 1/Championship. Last season was poor but before that we had a 7th and a 6th.

We were relegated twice under Lyall and Greenwoods table finishes were pretty average.

Other than the playing more attractive football your response is somewhat inaccurate Zico.

Greenwood and Lyall played to win, Moyes plays to not lose. Im pretty sure with the way pitches are these days Ron and John's win rates would be much higher and of course it would be far more entertaining.

Would hazard a guess that a goat wouldn't play for a 0-0 at home against a team below us in the league.

Paqueta and kudus being out is no excuse for that shit tonight.

Geezer is no where near greenwood and lyall, amd as delightful as it was, most premiership teams would have won that European trophy last season, the teams in it were absolutely abysmal.

When he wins something that actually has quality in it then fair enough.

Re: Moyes and the GOAT conversation
Goose,

I was talking about my position on Moyes being consistent. I know you’ll remember this because we had a discussion on Moyes when he came back and I said I was happy with the appointment.

As for Moyes record, let’s face it Pellegrini brought in some players that shouldn’t have been here and blew through $100 mill doing it.

Spurs did the same with their Gareth Bale money. Spending big doesn’t guarantee success, look at Chelsea and Man U for proof. With it comes a lot of pressure and expectations.

Looking back since Moyes appointment he has had his ups and downs but he has definitely got us on the right path right now. And I know it’s not perfect but it’s a welcome change to what we’ve seen for fuck knows how long.

He has earned his new contract and long may it continue. Personally I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.

goose 8:24 Tue Jan 2
Re: Moyes and the GOAT conversation
I dunno about consistent from day 1.

Taking over from Pellegrini he was average. Stayed up with an almost identical record to the main he replaced.

First full season - very good
Second season - very good up to January but fell away.
Third season - awful in the league but won a trophy.
Fourth season - good first half.

Re: Moyes and the GOAT conversation
As for my position on Moyes it’s been consistent from Day 1. I was on board with his re-appointment and have said all along I am not ready to throw in the tail on him because we are heading in the right direction.

Was I upset about the team selection for Liverpool, yes, I was that doesn’t mean I want him fired. To constantly slag him off even though we are winning is beyond retarded.

So We get it, you hate Moyes! I would tell you all to shut the fuck up whining you fucking know nothing bunch of cunts. But we all know you miserable cunts just can’t help yourself.

Vexed hasn’t been right yet, the idiot is clueless as is Daveyg.

So Get behind the team and manager and enjoy the second half of the season For Fuck Sake!

Fuck me there are some right fucking clowns on this site. It’s embarassing!
